The Relationship between Alcohol, Drugs and Crime

Obviously there is a strong relationship between alcohol, drugs, and crime. There are the crimes linked to the using or possessing of illegal substances like drinking underage or having pot. Then there are the crimes we commit while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Then there are crimes that are linked to getting drugs-like stealing. The relationship between alcohol, drugs, and crime is very clear.
Basically, the relationship between alcohol, drugs and crime can be broken down into three categories. The first category is called “Alcohol and Drug Defined.” These are violations of the laws that prohibit or regulate the possession, use, distribution, or manufacture of alcohol or illegal drugs. There are numerous examples of this type of crime. Selling drugs to anyone or alcohol to a minor is in this category, as is growing pot plants or making meth. Possessing any illegal substance also falls in this category.
The second category of the relationship between alcohol, drugs, and crime is called “Alcohol and Drug-Related.” This category includes violations of laws as a result of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs or trying to get cash to pay for alcohol or drugs. Examples of offenses in this category include criminal behavior resulting from the effects of alcohol or drugs (e.g. DUI, fights, theft, and vandalism). Stealing money to get money to buy alcohol and drugs is also included in this category, as is violence against rival drug dealers.
The third and final category of the relationship between alcohol drugs and crime is called “Alcohol and Drug Using Lifestyle.” This category is violations of laws as a result of living a lifestyle where a person may not have a job or source of income and is exposed to situations and individuals that encourage crime. Examples include violations as a result of being part of a gang or learning criminal skills from someone you use drugs with and then later putting them in practice.
The relationship between Alcohol, Drugs and Crime: Substance abuse and arrest
Substance abusers get re-arrested more than any other class of criminal. And that makes sense, because if you don’t treat the substance abuse, drug addicts and alcoholics will continue to use and drink; which means getting caught for possession, driving under the influence, stealing to support their habit, and selling drugs so they can afford their habit. That’s the terrible curse of addiction, addicts and alcoholics continue to use and drink despite negative consequences.
To truly weaken the relationship between alcohol, drugs and crime, studies have shown that treatment is much more effective than jail time. In some cases, treatment can reduce the re-arrest rate by over thirty percent. This is because treatment focuses on the addiction, not just punishment for the crime. Treating the root cause of the behavior is much more effective and cost effective than simply putting a drug addict or an alcoholic behind bars. Holding someone in jail, without access to alcohol, drugs, or drug addiction treatment is not only expensive, it’s ineffective.
