Psychedelic Mushrooms

Psychedelic mushrooms are also known as psilocybin mushrooms.  These are mushrooms that contain psychoactive alkaloids. Psilocybin is present in varying concentrations in over 200 species of mushrooms. Usually, they are referred to as “shrooms” or “magic mushrooms.” The use of psychedelic mushrooms dates back to religious and healing rituals in ancient times. Most people use psychedelic mushroom by eating them or making a tea with them.

Psychedelic mushrooms are listed as Schedule 1 drugs meaning that the drugs are deemed to have a high potential for abuse and are not recognized for medical use.

As with many hallucinogens, the effects of psychedelic mushrooms are subjective and can vary considerably among individual users. Psychedelic tea made from magic mushrooms causes change in perception, thought, and emotion. When psilocybin is ingested, it is broken down to produce psilocin, which is responsible for the psychedelic effects. The effects can last anywhere between three and eight hours, depending on the dose. The normal dose for psychedelic mushrooms is usually around 1 to 2.5 grams. Above five grams of psychedelic mushrooms is considered a heavy dose.

There have been calls for medical investigation of the use of psychedelic mushrooms. There are also studies that show that psychedelic mushroom, or more specifically psilocybin has the ability to send those with OCD, clinical depression and debilitating mental health conditions into complete remission.

Psychedelic mushrooms when they effect the sensory of an individual create noticeable changes in the audio, visual, and tactile sense. This can become apparent from thirty minutes to an hour after ingesting them. The shift in perception due to psychedelic mushroom can include enhancement and contrasting colors, strange light phenomena, increased visual activity, surfaces that seem to ripple, shimmers, complex open and close eye visuals that form images, object morph, a sense of melting into the environment, and trails around moving objects. Sounds seem to be heard with increased clarity; like music for example takes on a more profound effect.

When psychedelic mushrooms affect the emotional state of someone a lot occurs. A negative environment could induce what is known as a bad trip whereas a comfortable environment would allow for a more pleasant trip. Many people like to take shrooms with friends or people who are already “tripping” because it makes a more pleasant experience.

Many people report spiritual experiences after taking psychedelic mushrooms. A study done at John Hopkins university found that one-third of the participants in taking psychedelic mushrooms described it as being one of the single most spiritual experiences or significant moments in their life. Two-thirds reported that it was among the top most spiritually significant experience of their lives. 79% of the participants, two months after the study, reported increased well-being. They also reported anxiety and depression symptoms to be decreased or completely gone. 14 months after the study 64% of participants still experienced an increased well-being and/or life satisfaction.

The use of psychedelic mushrooms has been going on for a long time actually since the beginning of time and people will probably continue to use them until the end of time. This is especially true because they grow wildly in certain conditions although eating the wrong mushroom can be deadly. Psychedelic mushrooms don’t really make it into the news a lot but they definitely make their way into someone’s memory after use.
