Modafinil Smart Drugs

Modafinil is a prescription medication that is used to promote wakefulness. Modafinil is most commonly used to treat excessive sleepiness caused by sleep apnea, narcolepsy, shift work or a sleep disorder but recently Modafinil has been more commonly known as a smart drug. The reasons Modafinil has been known as a smart drug is because of its cognitive enhancing effects. In fact some people have gone so far as to say Modafinil is the real life drug that is shown in the movie ‘Limitless’ starring Bradley Cooper. In its off-label use as a smart drug, it is a well-known way to stay awake used to fight fatigue by E.R. doctors, study-obsessed college students, and military personnel.  Athletes have been named in the media as Modafinil users, including baseball’s Barry Bonds, who used Modafinil along with human growth hormone and anabolic steroids.

Modafinil smart drug is only one of numerous performance-enhancing smart drugs that can be found online. Modafinil gives a sensation of natural wakefulness for hours at a time without the jittery buzz and sleep disruption that may be side effects of Adderall or Ritalin and even caffeine. Modafinil smart drug also sharpens the mind, boosts memory and helps with problem solving.

Modafinil is marketed as Provigil in the United States and was first approved by the FDA in 1998. Modafinil is a prescription only drug but it can be bought online from more than sketchy overseas pharmacies. Modafinil half-life in the body is 15 hours – significantly longer than many drugs, so those taking it have to wait a long time for the feeling of sleepiness to return. Modafinil has a sister drug too, sold under the brand name Nuvigil, is an even stronger sleepiness-fighter, and is also prescription-only. So how is Modafinil, Provigil or Nuvigil smart drugs any different from Adderall or Ritalin or the other smart drugs out there? Well, unlike Ritalin or Adderall, Modafinil is not an amphetamine and doesn’t flood the body with dopamine in the same way.

This is what made scientists originally believe that it was non-habit forming although there are some stories popping up that seem to doubt that claim. The best way the use of Modafinil has been described has come from forums and message boards online where users say that it doesn’t so much as speed you up but clear your mind. And over the years since its conception Modafinil or as it is known in the U.S. Provigil has slowly made its way to the hands of students and workaholics everywhere. The scary thing about Modafinil smart drug is that there have been no studies about its long term effects and what kind of impact it could have on healthy brains such as a college student’s brain. What is known is that Modafinil can cause sleep deprivation and weight loss.

As Modafinil smart drug gets more and more press it is sure that more and more new research will come out about the long term effects of such a drug and its potential dangers. One thing is for sure, Modafinil may be like the drug in ‘Limitless’ but ‘Limitless’ if you have seen the movie got much worse before it got better.
